According To Froggy At BlackFive, Murtha Has "Jumped The Shark."
I love Saturdays because they give us a chance to catch up from the hecticness of the week. Cleaning, yard work, etc., however today in Arizona was hardly the day to do anything outside except sweat and curse God for this unbearable, disgusting heat. And because it is Saturday, we are just now getting around to The Asylum. Apologies to those regular readers who are always looking for us earlier than now, but habits are hard to break.
Regardless of that, yes, John Murtha--former Marine now turned "peace activist" politician--has decided that he is not content with losing in the House, again. Nor does he seem fazed by the vote in the Senate that killed a similar move by John Kerry to call for a complete withdrawal of our troops from Iraq. He has decided to ratchet this debate up according to NRO's Media Blog. The following quote comes from CNN's Situation Room:
MURTHA: The thing that disturbed me and worries me about this whole thing is we can't get them to change direction. And I said over and over in debate, if you listen to any of it, in Beirut President Reagan changed direction, in Somalia President Clinton changed direction, and yet here, with the troops out there every day, suffering from these explosive devices, and being looked at as occupiers — 80 percent of the people want us out of there — and yet they continue to say, "We're fighting this thing." We're not fighting this. The troops are fighting this thing. That's who's doing the fighting.
NRO's Media Blog and Froggy both point out precisely what transpired after President Clinton's famous pullout in the face of Islamofascism:
"The youth were surprised at the low morale of the American soldiers and realized more than before that the American soldier was a paper tiger and after a few blows ran in defeat. And America forgot all the hoopla and media propaganda ... about being the world leader and the leader of the New World Order, and after a few blows they forgot about this title and left, dragging their corpses and their shameful defeat."
"Black Hawk Down" was one of the darkest days in this nation's history. Army Rangers and Delta Force entered "the Mog" to apprehend a couple of close people to Aidid, the warlord we were supposed to be there hassling. Hassling turned into a joke when the White House refused to give the soldiers what they needed to accomplish the mission. On that particular day, it was AC-130 "Spectre" gunship support and light armor. When things went bad, namely the Black Hawk helicopter piloted by Warrant Officer Michael Durant, they had to hold back the forces of Aidid for over twelve hours. Eighteen men died in that operation, and President Clinton believed that to be too high of a price to pay.
What President Clinton did was play "war-games" with our soldiers in an expecditure of manpower that was not needed. Or, if it truly were, more troops and a clearer mission should have been defined. With the 18 dead soldiers on his hands, he could not bear the thought of what America would think of him if he had not pulled the troops out. To him, it was a crap-shoot, and it is one he lost int he eyes fo the military, their families, and their supporters. It was a slap in the face to every man or woman who ever put that uniform on. Can we imagine what it would have been like if President Roosevelt called it quits on the Normandy beaches when we reached 18 dead Marines?
Furthermore, he does not seem to have the foggiest notion about what he is saying. A majority of the Iraqis want us to stay until their military is ready. The Iraqis, in the recent crackdown around Baghdad, has handled 75-80% of the work. We are serving as rear security, and choke points so that few of these terrorists slip out. And I do not believe that garbage about our troops seen as occupiers. We are not occupiers, the Iraqis know it, and we will stay until either A) The job is finished, or B) We are asked to leave. Thus far, no official word has come fromt he recognized head of Iraq that we are to leave.
So, I ask Mr. Murtha, "Where are your sources; cite them please because you sound like a liar."
Of course this would come as no surprise to anyone--not even his Brother Marines--when one considers that he was the first to call for withdrawal, he has criticized Gitmo (and therefore his brothers), he has overblown Haditha (basically calling his brothers murderers), has reissued his call for withdrawal, and now has decided it is all right to cite President Clinton as an example of how to handle this sort of policy. President Clinton cut and run, and he did so because he had no idea what to do with the military. He hated it, and did his best to wreck it and emasculate it. To him, they were a plaything. But to the nation, they stand as our defense in a pretty violent world.
And they are doing that right now in Iraq. But John Murtha has finally ensured that he will go down as a disgrace to the United States Marine Corps. Congratulations, representative; I know of few who can wreck a good name so quickly. (Well, unless you are John Kerry, and propose a "global test" over what we can and cannot do in the world. Pardon the arrogance, but this is America. We do not ask permission to act int he defense of this nation.)
