Of The Wisdom Of Ben Stein, and Bench Nominees.
Everyone knows we cruise the ‘Net. Everyday we spend more time on the blog sites than anywhere else. Sure we hit "legitimate" news sites, but our information comes at a much quicker rate from bloggers than the slow-@$$ MSM. Inevitably, we pick up a story or two from them. This is one of those times.
LittleGreenFootballs is an excellent site, and not just for news. It lends a certain level of comedy to the day. And today is no different. For those that enjoy Ben stein’s humor, this is an exceptional treat. Not only does he have a wit that could probably match Ann Coulter and Justice Scalia, he has a pin-point, precision intellect that is as rapier sharp as my wit. In other words, the guy’s got the brains.

Can anyone even remember now what Nixon did that was so terrible? He ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POW’s, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel’s life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. Does anyone remember what he did that was bad?
Oh, now I remember. He lied. He was a politician who lied. How remarkable. He lied to protect his subordinates who were covering up a ridiculous burglary that no one to this date has any clue about its purpose. He lied so he could stay in office and keep his agenda of peace going. That was his crime. He was a peacemaker and he wanted to make a world where there was a generation of peace. And he succeeded.
That is his legacy. He was a peacemaker. He was a lying, conniving, covering up peacemaker. He was not a lying, conniving drug addict like JFK, a lying, conniving war starter like LBJ, a lying, conniving seducer like Clinton — a lying, conniving peacemaker. That is Nixon’s karma.
When his enemies brought him down, and they had been laying for him since he proved that Alger Hiss was a traitor, since Alger Hiss was their fair-haired boy, this is what they bought for themselves in the Karma Supermarket that is life:
1) The defeat of the South Vietnamese government with decades of death and hardship for the people of Vietnam.
2) The assumption of power in Cambodia by the bloodiest government of all time, the Khmer Rouge, who killed a third of their own people, often by making children beat their own parents to death. No one doubts RN would never have let this happen.
Despite a few points about Nixon I’m not too happy about (pardon me for not being "nuanced" enough for others) he was a good president. He wasn’t great in terms of Reagan, JFK, FDR, Washington, Jefferson, et al, but he was a good commander-in-chief. I disdain those on the Left that bring him up, and refuse to acknowledge the crimes that Clinton perpetrated that he was duly prosecuted for. It’s not my fault he ran into a partisan Senate that, likewise, refused to acknowledge his crimes.
For the record, as if it hasn’t been highlighted enough, Clinton was found guilty of three specific crimes. He was found guilty of lying to a federal grand jury. He was found guilty of lying to the judge in the case. He was found guilty of suborning perjury. For those on the Left side of the aisle "suborning" means encouraging. He encourgaed Monica Lewinsky to lie in her federal grand jury testimony. That’s a crime. The House impeached him on these charges. The Senate lacked the balls to follow through and remove him. We should have known better, and not moved forward with the removal from office. We should have known. Shame on us. But the country knows it, and it’s a stigma that the average American will hang around Clinton’s neck. He was impeached.
Ben Stein believes that no one knows why the Watergate break-in occurred. I will grant him that, but based on what I’ve researched, it revolved on gaining dirt on Democrats for an alleged call-girl ring going on through their suites at the Watergate. Anyone who disputes that specific claim can challenge G. Gordon Liddy in court. He’s won every lawsuit presented against him, and as a key member of the break-in crew, that is what he states was the primary goal of the team in the break-in; it was to gain evidence against the Democrats.
As for the history unfolding around him, no, Nixon could do nothing to prevent it as his enemies from long ago drew their knives and prepared to take down a sitting president at a time of war. Kind of irnoic seeing as that’s what the Democrats are trying to do right now to Bush. The difference is that Nixon was on the House Un-American Committee where he was instrumental in the outing and prosecution of Alger Hiss. That’s right. The Left’s poster boy that to this day they still defend despite the overwhelming evidence to show that Hiss was a Communist spy, and a man who was on FDR’s elbow at Yalta when the Allies carved up Eastern Europe.
Hi enemies wanted his head for that offense, and they got it, eventually. But As Ben Stein states, I can find little that Nixon did that was bad. What he did that was egregious was he offended another party in this nation that pays back it’s slights.

John Hinderocker at PowerLine states the he has no problem with McConnell being appointed to the USSC, and winning confirmation. This goes back to what I stated earlier today.
We don’t need activist judges on any federal courts. We need judges that interpret the law, and based on McConnell’s record, he doesn’t show that sort of commitment. McConnell, more than anything, reminds me of a Souter; a judge with credentials showing a conservative side, for the most part, but easily swayed to act in an activist way.
This is why our courts are screwed up. Scalia’s record is literally "on the record". I agree with him. I can’t agree with McConnell. Far too many of his decision that I’ve read show an activist judge that acts much like McCain. A "maverick" status isn’t what’s needed on the high court. What’s needed is a jurist that interprets the law, and understands it concerns us, the American public.

From Rawriter.
I'm glad that clinton was impeached. I'm glad that he lost his license but it should have been longer than for five years. I'm glad that there were money judgments against him. I'm also glad that he wasn't found guilty by the senate. Why, you ask? it's obvious that Gore would have been president and with it the bully pit for the next election. As it is, gore is no more.
I was never a fan of Nixon but then I'm not a fan type person. When it was considered extremely dangerous, he went to China. He was a good President-internationally. The liberals with the msm saw an opportunity to get rid of Nixon. Being the astute politician that he was, he knew he would probably be impeached and found guilty. He did the honorable thing for the country and resigned. As to Felt the alleged deep throat, he was not honorable and had an ax to grind. He's no hero.
I agree with your assessment that McConnell is not what is needed on the Supreme court. Frankly, I prefer Scalia. We know where he stands and I stand with him.
(note: The lower case of the first letter that should be upper case is intentionally to show my lack of respect)
