So, There Were No WMDs, huh?
( Hat-tip: Captain’s Quarters)
http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/005207.php

This morning, the Washington Post presented a startling report. They have reported that US and coalition troops in Iraq have uncovered a massive cache of chemicals.

BAGHDAD, Aug. 13 -- U.S. troops raiding a warehouse in the northern city of Mosul uncovered a suspected chemical-weapons factory containing 1,500 gallons of chemicals believed destined for attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces and civilians, military officials said Saturday.

Monday's early morning raid found 11 precursor agents, "some of them quite dangerous by themselves," a military spokesman, Lt. Col. Steven A. Boylan, said in Baghdad.

Combined, the chemicals would yield an agent capable of "lingering hazards" for those exposed to it, Boylan said. The likely targets would have been "coalition and Iraqi security forces, and Iraqi civilians," in part owing to the difficulty anyone deploying the chemicals would have had in keeping the agents from spreading out over a wide area, he said.

It is evident, at this point, that these were not chemicals left over from the Saddam regime. We have all those sites under our control. And whereas we have found the occasional stockpile here and there, this represents the first significant find of the GWOT in terms of WMDs in the hands of terrorists. And I know a few people may disagree with us here at the Asylum, but please let me explain.

We have had virtual control of the country since the moment Baghdad fell. Saddam was on the run and in hiding. His kids soon bit the dust thanks to coalition forces. Once the initial fighting was done, and the sites marked by our intelligence agencies were searched and catalogued, there was no way we would not have known about a cache of this size. So, that means that they have been smuggled in recently. Not recently as in the last couple of weeks, but gradually over time. It was luck and intelligence that led us to this site.

1500 gallons is a lot, and there is not telling—right now—how much those chemicals could have yielded in the way of chemical weapons. But the truth is laid bare: The terrorists had plans to construct them, and almost assuredly use them. Likely on us, but perhaps even on the civilian populace; after all, Saddam had no such reservations for the Kurds.

Though US officials are not stating so specifically, early indications show that these chemicals could be used in the making of Sarin gas. Anyone remember the reports of our soldiers in MOPP gear during the invasion, and how we were worried they would come under a chemical attack? Well, now I guess it is real. If the terrorists get their hands on such a weapon, or its components, the strategy of this war needs to be reexamined. Not the overall one; that is clear. To quote Napoleon: :When you set out to take Vienna, you take Vienna."

The strategy I speak of is on the ground. Where it counts most as it is our men and women on the ground fighting this war. We cannot afford to witness, on network news, a Sarin gas attack against our troops. Demoralizing would not even begin to cover the sentiments at home. (Which is why I am sure the Left—the media, especially—would be ecstatic if it occurred.)

But for those on the Left that state there were no WMDs in Iraq when we hit the ground, that may be so. But I doubt that it is completely true. The UN has satellite images of truck columns going to Syria. They even have unnamed officials, quoted by the World Tribune, that they—the UN—knew that Saddam was removing his WMD components to Syria. This is an indisputable fact. (And yes, I dislike the UN, but I am willing to accept their assessment, at this stage.)

These facts annoyt the Left, as they should. It is just further proof that they cannot be trusted in certain regards. The 9/11 commission is discovering this quickly, and they should. Their apparent, preconceived, biased notions and assertions are coming out to be laid bare, for all to see. They were not concerned with connecting the dots. They were trying to smear a sitting president. Likewise with the Left; they are not concerned with the threats that appear on the radar screen to this nation. They are concerned solely with their drive to reachieve their power.

I'm one of those that believe that Saddam had WMD and much were removed from the country. Bringing WMD or material to make them into the country is indeed novel. It puts another dimension in this war. Rawriter
