Nominations To Drive The Left Nuts ...
include John Bolton and Kenneth Timmerman. (HT: Captain's Quarters.)
John Bolton, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is one of two Americans who have been nominated for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.
Last year, Democrats and a few Republicans refused to confirm Bolton to the U.N. post, forcing President Bush to resort to a recess appointment.
Bolton and Kenneth R. Timmerman were formally nominated by Sweden's former deputy prime minister Per Ahlmark, for playing a major role in exposing Iran's secret plans to develop nuclear weapons.
They documented Iran's secret nuclear buildup and revealed Iran's "repeated lying" and false reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency, a press release said.
Bolton formerly served as U.S. undersecretary for arms control and international security, and he authored the Proliferation Security Initiative, an international effort to block WMD shipments.
The effort eventually unmasked the secret nuclear network directed by Pakistan nuclear scientist A. Q. Khan.
Timmerman, an independent researcher, has written extensively on Iran's nuclear activities for more than 20 years. His report for the Simon Wiesenthal Center in 1992 first detailed Iran's ties to A.Q. Khan. His most recent book, "Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran," was published last year.
In June 2005, Senate Republicans fell six votes in their second effort to end a Democrat filibuster of Bolton's nomination to serve as U.N. ambassador.
Bolton's supporters complained that Bolton was the target of a Democrat smear campaign. A number of Democrats and some Republicans complained about Bolton's brusque dealings with co-workers and underlings.
One of Bolton's Republican critics - Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio -- now says he thinks Bolton is doing a good job."I spend a lot of time with John on the phone. I think he is really working very constructively to move forward," Reuters quoted Voinovich as saying on Monday.
Voinovich added that he's still watching Bolton -- but, "at this stage of the game I am pleased with the progress that is being made here and the team that he has gathered together here."
In May 2006, the thought that Bolton might be confirmed as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations almost brought Voinovich to tears.
Voinovich's emotional moment came one day after he sent a letter to his fellow senators, telling them, "In these dangerous times, we cannot afford to put at risk our nation's ability to successfully wage and win the war on terror with a controversial and ineffective ambassador to the United Nations."
I congratualte both men in the honr they have received. I'm not fond of the Nobel Peace Prize, which has been cheapened with some of it's past recipients, including Yasser Arafat and President Jimmy Carter. But, I'm not downplaying either's efforts to keep one step ahead of Iran, and reveal to the world what Iran has been moving towards and planning for.
We stood behind the appointment of Bolton from the start, and were among the bloggers uriging the president to stand his ground, and if necessary, recess appoint the man. And both Marcie and I are aware of Mr. Timmerman's phenomenal work. I do own a copy of that book, and along with Richard Miniter's recent release "Disinformation: 22 Media Myths That Undermine The War On Terror," the Left has never felt such a devastating one-two punch like these two pack. Both their works blow the lid off of the lies and misdirection perpetuated by the Left and the media; I consider them absolute must-reads for anyone wanting an inside track on the truth that the MSM refuses to present.
Bolton, in his own right, has not been nearly the "bull in the china shop" the Left built him up to be. He has been calm, cool, and collected in the execution of his duties. He has worked behind the scenes with our allies to prepare the world for this moment in history. It is equivalentr to the Adlaiu Stevenson address to the UN where he revealed the missiles in Cuba, and the English decision to oust Neveille Chamberlain in favor of a much more hawkish Churchill; preparing for the war ahead. John Bolton has given the world all it needs when it comes to Iran, in addition to the recent IAEA report, and referral to the UN Security Council.
Both men desire only what is right for the world. Iran having nuclear weapons, as it is backed up by the former deputy prime minister's nomination, is not in the best interest of the free world, or even the tiny region of the Middle East. Messrs. Timmerman and Bolton have worked to head that nightmare off. Thus far, it's paying dividends. Not even Iran's incitement to violence over the last couple of days can take the attention off their recent actions.
Iran has:
--broken the seals on several of it's nuclear facilities.
--demanded the IAEA turn off the cameras planted in their facilities.
--stated, repeatedly, their intention and "right" to further their programs to a weaponized potentiality.
--requested that the IAEA remove the reamining seals on their other facilities.
This may seem like bluster to a few, like those on the Left, but what they fail to grasp, and that Mr. Timmerman has pointed out, is that they are much further along in their nuclear program than Saddam ever was. A crash program--provided some scheduled tests go OK--could net them a nuclear weapon within a minimum of eight to nine months. A nuclear test is scheduled for March, which would be the last window of opportunity Israel feels that it has to eradicate such an open threat.
So, thanks to Messrs. Bolton and Timmerman, we have about a month and a half to go before this escalates again. Hopefully, their continued work will provide a comparable solution to the problem at hand, and hopefully it doesn't involve a direct invasion of Iran.
But, both men are to be commended for a job well-done, and I hope the announcement drove the Left to the bar to demand a double-double of whatever they were drinking. It's one they should choke on for their blatant, partisan obstruction of the president, and his duties enumerated within the Constitution.
