You Want Cartoons? You Can't Handle This Cartoon
Frank Miller, legendary in the comics world for reworking Batman is at it again. In his newest graphic novel entitled Holy Terror, Batman, everyone's favorite caped crusader is going after al Qaeda. (HT: Michell Malkin)
During his WonderCon panel, Frank Miller discussed his next graphic novel. Once again, Miller returns to the world of the Batman, this time with Holy Terror, Batman!. Though the title plays with Robin's classic catchphrase, the book deals with a serious subject. Gotham has been attacked by Al Qaeda and Batman sets out to defend the city he loves. The book, which Miller has inked through 120 pages, is expected to run roughly 200 pages total.
Miller proudly announced the title of his next Batman book, which he will write, draw and ink. Holy Terror, Batman! is no joke. And Miller doesn't hold back on the true purpose of the book, calling it "a piece of prop[a]ganda," where 'Batman kicks al Qaeda's ass."
The reason for this work, Miller said, was "an explosion from my gut reaction of what's happening now." He can't stand entertainers who lack the moxy of their '40s counterparts who stood up to Hitler. Holy Terror is "a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we're up against."
It's been a long time since heroes were used in comics as pure propaganda. As Miller reminded, "Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That's one of the things they're there for."
"These are our folk heroes," Miller said. "It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you've got Al Qaeda out there."
As a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed Batman. He was my favorite. He never had the superpowers. Nope. It was all raw guts, courage, physical and mental strength. Hence the nickname he was given, "The Dark Knight Detective." He has taken on the Joker numerous times, and saw the depravity of the psychotic lunatic. The Joker killed the second Robin in Jason Todd, crippled Barbara Gordon with a shot that severed her spine, kidnapped James Gordon and almost drove him insane. He was beaten, broken and bloody by Bane, and fought his way back from that episode. Fought with eco-terrorists who unl;eashed a plague on Gotham City. Then, watched his beloved city be destroyed under the force of an 8 point earthquake.
Bruce Wayne/Batman has been to Hell and back. As an avid fan of Batman, I'm looking forward to seeing what Mr. Miller has in store for bin Laden's goons. And I have to agree with Mr. Miller. It's time to remind even the comic book generation what this war is about. It isn't as though we haven't seen our superheroes in wars before. Capt. America tackled one of Hitler's associates in the Red Skull, and yes, even Superman's been involved in our nation's hostilities. (And no, I don't mean the lame movie "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," where Superman becomes anti-nuclear in the movie.)
I have been a fan of Miller's return to the darker side of Batman. For too long we were entertained by the campy crapola of the early years. Frank Miller's piece de resistance in "The Dark Knight Returns" gave a glimpse into the grittier, more hard-edged Batman. The sort that comic book enthusists like myself really enjoyed. Since then, the writers and artists of Batman have tried to maintain that sort of look and feel to him. With Mr. Miller at the helm of this new project, this is sure to be another feather in his cap. I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of this when it comes out.
Not for the propaganda that Miller is proposing, but because it's my favorite superhero drawing a line against the radicals in this world that seem content with trying the world under the Sharia laws they believe, passing judgment, and instituting the sentence of death to those who do not believe, and who will not convert. The 7th Century is about to meet the 21st Century in a head-on collision that is sure to have Batman fans salivating until the graphic novel hits store shelves.
