House Idiots On The March
This morning members of the House of Representatives put the Dubai Ports World business deal on the floor, and voted against allowing the deal from going forward. Letme just say this: Yes, Thomas and I were apprehensive about letting this go through, BUT we were willing to allow the forty-five day investigation to go through, and see what they found. Had the investigation uncovered anything that was out of the ordinary, or was considered a risk to our ports, then we would have backed the Congress moving to block the deal. However, if everything had turned out to be copacetic, then we would have had no problems with the deal. And I chastise the media for spinning this as DPW having "control" of the ports. They would not have had control of the ports, but rather a couple terminals in the ports in question.
However, DPW, after watching the hullabaloo over here in America issued the following statement:
"Because of the strong relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the United States and to preserve that relationship, DP World has decided to transfer fully the U.S. operation of P&O Operations North America to a United States entity."
Congratulations, sheeple. You gave the Democrats a victory that they are going to take credit for, and are also giving them a talking point--that they are "strong" on Homeland Security--to be exploited in the 2006 mid-terms. Not the smartest move that could have been made. Again, rather than allowing the forty-five day investigation to go through, the scaredy-cats in the House--mostly GOP members--killed it.
We are going into an election cycle. There are a number of things the Democrats can be hammered on. Aside from the fact that they have no plan for America to run on, they are still incredibly weak on national defense, and homeland security. Whereas I am in favor of not offending certain people, when you put political correctness above what is necessary to protect and defend this nation then you really are not dealing with those two particular topics.
Today, the president signed the Patriot Act extension. Now the new version of the Patriot Act is not nearly as tough as its predecessor. The majority of the original Act has been renewed, and minimal civil liberties concerns have been addressed. These concerns, in my opinion, were negliable, and should not have prompted the hold-up of the Act's renewal for well beyond it's expiration date in December of 2005.
Needless to say, I am not happy with Congress today. Not only did they act like chicken little's over Dubai Ports World, and continued to allow the media to spin the controversy out of control, but they also succumbed to Democrat pressure over the Patriot Act. I understand that compromise is a part of working in Congress. Not everyone is going to get their way every time. But, as we do control the majorities in both houses, we should be steamrolling the Democrats to push the president's agenda forward, and not bowing to the Leftists when they start to throw a temper-tantrum.
