Polls? I Do Not Believe Them

Laura Bush had a few words to say regarding her husband's approval ratings lately, and I could not concur more with her. She told Reuters and FOX that she does not buy the hype from the media:

First lady Laura Bush said on Sunday she does not believe opinion polls showing her husband's approval ratings at record low levels.

Interviewed on Fox News Sunday, Laura Bush said she did not think people were losing confidence in President George W. Bush, despite a series of polls showing support for him at its lowest point in his five-year presidency and among the lowest for any president in the past 50 years.

"I don't really believe those polls. I travel around the country. I see people, I see their responses to my husband. I see their response to me," she said.

"As I travel around the United States, I see a lot of appreciation for him. A lot of people come up to me and say, 'Stay the course'."

Many recent polls have put Bush's job approval rating below 35 percent. One, the Harris poll, published last Friday, measured his approval at 29 percent, the first time any survey has put his support below the 30 percent mark. Two other polls published last week put his job approval at 31 percent.

In a separate interview on ABC's "This Week," Laura Bush said her husband's popularity was suffering because the country had been through a difficult year.

We've had a very, very difficult year, starting with the hurricane last September, but already because of the terrorist attack in 2001 and then the war on terror since then," she said. "He's the one that has to make the hard decisions. And, of course, they don't please everyone."

Mrs. Bush complained that when her husband's popularity was high, newspapers did not put that on the front page. Now it was low, they took great delight in highlighting the fact.

Asked if she thought the media had been unfair, Mrs. Bush said: "No, I don't think it's necessarily unfair. I think it's just, you know, I think they may be enjoying this a little bit."

Unfair? I disagree with the First Lady on this. It might have something to do with the fact that I am a blogger, and I see how the media treats the White House everyday. They beat the snot out of the president over Katrina, over Valerie Plame (and the lame MSM spin), over the NSA program, over the war, over the defunct UAE deal, and over immigration. To date, I cannot recall a decent story in the last year-and-a-half about the president.

But I have to agree with Mrs. Bush on the fact that she does see and talk to a wide range of people. These people do support the president. As she pointed out, as the president he makes the tough decisions and not everyone is going to be pleased. That is a fact, and one that is no more evident than Thomas and I commenting on things everyday. Sure, we have our disagreements with certain policies. We have our disputes over immigration, or how the White House cannot seem to keep Congress in line when it comes to judicial nominees.

But we do not hate the president. We do not loathe him. We are not the unhinged nuts in the country calling for his impeachment, or beating on him as though he is who the Democrats have to face, again, in 2008. He is out in 2008, and yet all of this anger and vitriol is tied into wearing him down. By now it should be more than obvious that this tactic is not working. He is not daunted or cowed by these feckless snobs.

The country understands what "President of the United States" means and the respect that office is due. Neither Thomas or I liked President Clinton. We thought that he, personally, was a pariah of the first order, and an inept fool when it came to running the country. HOWEVER, he was still the president and deserved respect for that.

The idea of respect is obviously a foreign concept to the Left. They have none for the president, let alone any conservative. But that is fine with us. Let them spew. Let the hatred grow. Let America see what these people are truly about. Their policies are indeed a danger to the nation, but that is nothing compared to the pure, seething hatred they have for all that America represents and stands for.

And that is why this year, and in 2008, with a concerted effort from the GOP base, we are going to enjoy kicking their @$$ back into irrelevance.

The Bunny ;)
