North Korea's Going To Test Missiles? No Worries ...
Let them. Let them fire off that missile they're hoping will splash down close enough to the United States, and give Crazy Kim his chance to pop open the bubbly. However I doubt he's too happy with this story today:
The United States has moved its ground-based interceptor missile defense system from test mode to operational amid concerns over an expected North Korean missile launch, a U.S. defense official said on Tuesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a Washington Times report that the Pentagon has activated the system, which has been in the developmental stage for years.
"It's good to be ready," the official said.
U.S. officials say evidence such as satellite pictures suggests Pyongyang may have finished fueling a Taepodong-2 missile, which some experts said could reach as far as Alaska.
"There's real caution in how to characterize it so as to not be provocative in our own approach," the defense official said of the move to activate the system.
The Pentagon and State Department have said a North Korean missile launch would be seen as "provocative."
First of all it should be noted that the North Koreans firing a missile over Japan in an attempt to see if it will reach us isn't as provocative to us as it is to Japan. Japan has been long at odds with North Korea and China, and I see this as saber-rattling to see if they can intimidate Japan.
Second, we could simply wait until he fires it, and knock it clean out of the sky. That ought to send a message to Kim Jong-Il that we're not going to tolerate this sort of garbage. They seem to think that they don't have to abide by the moratorium on missile testing, and that is a grave mistake right now. With the world moving in the direction it is right, especially in regard to Iran and North Korea, this is a magnification of a problem that is slowly moving towards a critical stage.
Third, in my personal opinion (and this is shared by few within the military), we need to take that missile out on the launch pad right now. Why? Simply put, can we trust them to not arm a warhead on the missile? They have stated to the world that they have nuclear warheads. Granted it's not smart to start a shooting war with the United States--especially regarding nuclear weapons--but then again, Crazy Kim isn;'t exactly the most stable person in the world in terms of sanity.
The missile defense system being up and running is a smart move, and should serve as warning to regimes like Crazy Kim's that this sort of action isn't appreciated, and will be stopped. Likewise without these regimes having the same sort of defense system leaves the aggressive nation open to a retaliatory strike from the United States. Would we light off a nuke in response? I would expect nothing less if another nation decided to fire one at us. I would definitely make sure that North Korea was turned into a quiet little neighborhood for the next few years, and make the largest parking lot for South Korea, ever.
