A Shrewd Strategy

Someone like Ann Coulter might be worried about the moves the Left is making right now on Roberts. Many might even, like her, get the impression that Roberts is another Souter based on these moves. I don’t think his jurisprudential qualifications, ideas, notions, nuances, or beliefs are at the heart of this. I think what is at the heart of this is the overall war. Napoleon once stated that "when you set out to take Vienna, you take Vienna." Most people take this statement as a bull-in-a-china-shop idea. I beg to differ. Napoleon was quite shrewd in the use of espionage.

In other words, it is not Roberts who is the "stealth" candidate. It is the Democrats who are the "stealth" party.

The Democrats are sitting back, and collecting themselves. So many have changed their initial tune of being opposed to Roberts to seeing nothing wrong with the man. The sickeningly sweet notions put forth by the party of obstruction would even make Willy Wonka’s teeth hurt. These people are bending over backwards to accommodate him. This isn’t the I’ll-smile-and-shake-your-hand-now-but-when-we’re-in-the-hearings-don’t-expect-any-favors sort of play the Democrats usually pull. It’s as obvious as the day is long.

They’re not going after Roberts. There won’t be any filibuster on him. No, that would be a mistake for the Democrats. They’re going to wait for nominee number two. This way they can point back to Roberts, and tell America that they gave the president what he wanted: A quick, non-controversial confirmation. This is part of the play, and we have to recognize a couple of things.

First, the next nominee will probably replace either Rehnquist, Stevens, or Ginsburg. Stevens is 85, and is slowing down. There are rumors circulating that Ginsburg is ill. And, everyone is still sitting on the edge of their seats over when Rehnquist will step down. So, Bush’s number two is going to be opposed because they’ll either replace the chief justice, or take away an ideologically-protected seat from the likes of Stevens and Ginsburg.

Second, as I stated above, they can reference the ease with which Roberts passed; clearly showing that they’re willing to work with the president. People like Limbaugh, Hannity, et al, have no clue as to what they’re talking about on this issue. They think that the Democrats are rolling over because they’re over a barrel. Nothing like that has happened. They’re not over a barrel. They’re prepping their next move.

As Machiavelli once wrote, "For those who desire peace, prepare for war." That’s what the Democrats are doing. With the loss of the Seditious Seven, and the entire Gang of 14 talking about how great Roberts is, the Democrats know they have no legs to stand on should it come down to a filibuster. So, they’re going to let Roberts slide through—I’m sure there will be "nay" votes, like another from Sen. Schumer—but his ride is going to be like being on the Tea-Cups at Disneyland.

It’s the next guy we have to be worried about, and prepared for. It doesn’t matter who it is, whether it’s Luttig, Brown, Owens, Garza, Alito, or whomever. They’re going to be the ones getting savaged by the Left. So, just back off of Roberts, and let him get up to the Court. We’ll make determinations from there, and prepare for Round Two. This "round two" over roberts isn’t even going to come to fruition.

Interesting evaluation why Robert's will slide through and be confirmed. As you know politics is a funny down and dirty game. When I take a look at the judiciary committee, he will be grilled and grilled hard.
The Y2K election and Roe Vs Wade will be on the table. This is too good of an opportunity to stroke the msm that the democrat won't let pass. When all is said and done, Roberts will be sworn in as justice of the supreme Court. Rawriter.
