Guest Blogging Part V: Subbing For The Sick One

Yes, the little lady made famous at the Asylum is under the weather with a bronchial infection, so I was called into throw relief. (A little baseball analogy as I am a White Sox Fan.) And the topic for tonight is immigration, and how we shouldn’t buy the hype coming from the White House.

Michael Chertoff, director of Homeland Security, made waves yesterday when he testified before the Judiciary Committee yesterday. The news was running all over the place with this piece:

HOMELAND SECURITY CHIEF: EXPEL ALL ILLEGALS... 'Our goal is to return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions'...

The problem is that’s not what he said. At least not in total. But this is where he stated it in the testimony. To read his entire statement, follow the link below this, and above his cut-and-pasted excerpt:

Today, a non-Mexican illegal immigrant caught trying to enter the United States across the southwest border has an 80% chance of being released immediately because we lack the holding facilities. Therefore, it is critical that we solve the problem of detention in order to carry out an effective enforcement strategy.

Through a comprehensive approach, we are moving to end this "catch and release" style of border enforcement by reengineering our detention and removal process.

Past experience has indicated that a concentrated effort at removal can actually deter illegal entries by non-Mexicans on the southwest border. Our plan is to expand removals by better utilizing our detention and removal assets to increase turnover.

Our goal at DHS is to completely eliminate the "catch and release" enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant – no exceptions. It should be possible to achieve significant and measurable progress to this end in less than a year.

He’s not referring to deporting ALL illegals here in the country. He’s talking specifically about OTMs, or Other Than Mexicans. Just to clarify this, I’m not racist, but I am extremely pro-LEGAL immigration. If you want to come here, then go through the process that every other potential citizen must go through. There are no exceptions for nations because of their closeness, or that their poor people are willing to come up here and do cheap labor. And, if he were truly serious about tackling the border problem, he wouldn’t have uttered the following:

The Cabinet officials emphasized that the president strongly opposed an amnesty for illegal aliens, and Chertoff agreed with Kennedy that trying to deport all illegal immigrants would not be possible. "It would take billions and billions and billions of dollars to do it," Chertoff said.

If I may offer a suggestion here, ladies and gentlemen: Learn how to prioritize your budgets. Other than Mexican illegal immigration is a national security issue. The same could be said for those that are Mexican. Not only does it put undo stress and problems on local law enforcement, but a good portion of those coming over the border are involved in a crime of some sort, whether it be drug smuggling, or reinforcing some of the most violent gangs on the Pacific seabord; much of which is centered in California.

Everything coming out of the white House is now about a "Temporary Worker Program." It’s the new White House code-word for Bush’s defeunct "guest worker program" and if Ted Kennedy and John McCain get their way, they will be the ones to write it. They’re not concerned with the effects that such a program might have. Michelle Malkin has an excellent question that has yet to be answered.

A question: what happens when those "temporary" workers have U.S. citizen children?

Yes, what does happen, then? Technically "anchor babies" aren’t legal. The Fourteenth Amendment’s misinterpretation by the Supreme Court has led us to this sad fact. Yes, they have precedent, but like Roe, the precedent should be overruled. The Fourteenth Amendment’s first clause (cited below) doesn’t apply to anchor babies. It applied to the freed slaves after the Civil War.

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."

This is not a serious effort by the government to curb this bane of our nation. This is window dressing. It reminds me of one of the final scenes in the Wizard of Oz: "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain..." Yes, they don’t want us to make so much hay over the immigration problem. The problem is that they don’t see it. I talk to Thomas or Marcie on a daily basis. They live in Arizona, and they see it. It’s not going to go away if we pay no attention to it. It will only continue to get worse.

The administration made a commendable effort to put more border guards on the border, but unless there is a level of seriousness from the administration to deal with those that are here, or those that evade the border patrol and ICE, then what is the point. The borders lack the security they need. That only happens because of political correctness and greed. Greed from those wanting what the illegals provide–cheap labor and uneducated votes–and political correctness because we bend over backwards for these people that have no rights–NO RIGHTS–to the perks of being a citizen of this nation.

Thomas has some sound ideas on how to deal with the border and immigration, but he won’t post them. He’s shouted down and told to shut up. Such is the fate of those that try to solve this problem. Those tied closely to it are afraid to listen to ideas. And maybe that’s the problem with the government and this administration. They’re tied so closely to it (as it is their job) that they’re afraid to do anything sensible for fear someone will be offended, or they’ll end up cutting back on a budget. Reagan did state the hardest thing to kill in DC was a bureaucracy once it was formed. He wasn’t kidding.

Anyone who believes in immigration enforcement and border security needs to call their representatives and senators. Let them know how you feel, and let them know you’re aware of the farce the president is peddling, and that they had better be against it.

Good blog and I'll wade in as I often do when I shouldn't. I, too, have made proposal and now I'm adding another. The illegal immigration problem is two fold, one illegally crossing the border and the other is violation of the visa mostly by staying when it expires. I have never bought into the argument that illegals do the work that we won't. Illegal means just that, it's against the law. When one breaks the law, they are a criminals, hence all illegals are criminals. Most people have no idea how or who issues a visa's. I'm not going into all of my propose remedies that includes reversing the anchor baby law but I will tell you my latest. Suspend all immigration and cancel all visa's for a period of five years or until the bulk of the problem is resolved. Rawriter
