An Anniversary To Remember: The Day The Cedar Revolution Began
This day is indeed an important day. Not only do Thomas and I mark this Valentine's Day together (love you babe!), but we are also marking the day of the beginning of the Lebanese Cedar Revolution; the day Rafik Hariri was assassinated by the Syrians.
There is no defense of the Assad's culpability in the assassination, and in his ushering this forward, he helped bring about the end of the occupation in Lebanon. Yes, this day is a historic day that we should all remember.
The democratization of Iraq and Afghanistan also helped this revolution along. As millions of Lebanese watched two nations formerly hostile to the region turn towards a new destiny, they too desired the same thing. Protests and pressure--both internally and internationally--finally freed the nation from the tyranny established in 1976 by the Syrian occupation. Now, as they take those crucial steps, the world watches another nation attempt to regain the identity it once had. Hopefully, this time around, they will not waste the opportunity.
As of right now, they seem to be doing fine. Our prayers are with those brave people of the Cedar Revolution, and of the patriots in Lebanon right now.
