Iran's New Fatwa

Yes, a new one has been issued, according to MEMRI. (Link to the piece on that page; story cited below.) If the world has not woken up yet, it had better, and soon on the heels of this.

"The spiritual leaders of the ultra-conservatives [in Iran] have accepted the use of nuclear weapons as lawful in the eyes of shari'a. Mohsen Gharavian, a disciple of [Ayatollah] Mesbah Yazdi [who is Iranian President Ahmadinejad's spiritual mentor], has spoken for the first time of using nuclear weapons as a counter-measure. He stated that 'in terms of shari'a, it all depends on the goal.'

"The religious leadership of the Islamic Republic [of Iran], which has until now regarded the use of nuclear weapons as opposed to shari'a, and has repeated this point again and again, has so far kept silent about this. In spite of the fact that, in the last few weeks, some of the senior [leaders] of the Islamic Republic have tried to reduce the pressure [exerted by] the radical [conservatives], the radicals nevertheless seem to have complete control over the [political] arena.

"[Iranian National Security Council Secretary] Ali Larijani, who is in charge of the nuclear dossier, has spoken to reporters only once since the [IAEA] Board of Governors approved its resolution - and his silence is significant.
[2] But yesterday, the IraNews news agency published recent remarks by Mohsen Gharavian regarding the nuclear issue. Gharavian is a lecturer at the religious schools of Qom, and is a disciple of [Ayatollah] Mesbah Yazdi. In his recent remarks, he said for the first time that the use of nuclear weapons may not constitute a problem according to shari'a. He further said that 'when the entire world is armed with nuclear weapons, it is permissible to use these weapons as a counter-[measure]. According to shari'a, too, only the goal is important...'

"[Gharavian] said that he sees no problem with the military use of nuclear weapons [sic]: 'One must say that when the entire world is armed with nuclear weapons, it is only natural that, as a counter-measure, it is necessary to be able to use these weapons. However, what is important is what goal they may be used for."

First things first. They are now, for the first time confirming that the use of nuclear weapons is okay with their religion. This is not an adherence to their holy law. It is manipulating it. They are using shari'a law as an excuse to continue their nuclear ambitions. And what are the goal that is being spoken of? I believe we have already heard it, and quite a few times from President Ahmadinejad: The annihilation of the State of Israel, which will lead to an inevitable clash with the West.

So, while the Washington press was busy harrassing Vice President Cheney, we have witnessed three important stories go virtually unreported. The first was the escape of 20 al Qaeda detainees in Yemen, including the USS Cole bomber, and the man who was one of the Lackawanna Six--the terror cell from Buffalo, NY. We have a story revolving around whether or not our government is going to continue to outsource port security, and to a nation that is not exactly our ally in the war on terror.

The United Arab Emirates have a terrible track record of controlling their borders, and allowing known terrorists to escape being captured. To allow them the security job formerly held by a London firm, recently bought out by the UAE's Dubai Ports, is suicide. And now we have a solid two weeks of saber rattling from Iran, and the news barely reports on it. Many MSM outlets barely paid attention to Jacques Chirac losing his cool over Iran, and outright accusing them of making nuclear weapons. It is a sure bet that the EU-3 negotiations are over, at this point. France is known for it's convenient cowardice, but it is obvious that Chirac does not trust the terror of Tehran.

That, in my estimate, is a safe bet not to trust him. Ahmadinejad is a hardened fighter in the Islamic revolution, and he has a vision for the future; the West and it's "Zionist" dogs bathed in nuclear fire. He wants to see us lying dead before the mahdi, Islam's savior. But it is telling when France is one of the first ones to jump into our camp over Iran.

As Thomas would say, this should give the world a "moment of pause." This is a sharp turn in the debate, and in the rhetoric. Scott Johnson agrees with a recent Michael Ledeen column. Put simply, and best by Mr. Ledeen:

When the French announced that the Iranian nuclear program was undoubtedly designed to produce weapons, Tehran demanded an apology. Above all, there is no longer any pretense of cooperation with the Big Three negotiators on the nuclear program.

This suggests that the mullahs do indeed believe they have acquired nuclear weapons, and there is no longer any need to play stalling games with the Germans, French, and Brits.

Go read Mr. Ledeen's piece. He points out that all pretenses and charades have been dropped in Iran. They are rounding up dissenters to their regime, and have threatened to kill them if the UN votes for sanctions. This is a stand-off; a high-stakes game of poker that has a lot more involved than a few measely dollars in a ante pot. And we should not forget that Iran had prepared for a nuclear test by March ...

The time for action is now. Negotiations are over.

Bunny ;)
