Videos Found On Suspects Computers
I am up late because I am not feeling too hot. I decided to jump online to check our mail, and cruise the blogs. And lo and behold what greets me on Captain Ed's excellent site but confirmation that the conspiracy nuts, like Andrew Sullivan, are completely wrong about Bojinka II:
Police investigating an alleged plot to bring down airliners have found several martyrdom videos in the course of their searches, the BBC has learned.
Unofficial police sources said the recordings - discovered on laptop computers - appear to have been made by some of the suspects being questioned.
Scotland Yard has refused to comment on what officers are finding.
Police are continuing to search woodland at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and 14 addresses.
The Metropolitan Police, which is leading the inquiry, has said it has already completed searches of 36 business and residential sites.
The conspiracy nuts on the Internet claim that this bust was all planned to take attention away from a whole host of subjects. From the war in Iraq that they claim is failing to the Israeli/Hezbollah war, and this report from the BBC shows that they have no clue whatsoever. There is a point where one must put away childish notions and ideas, and step into the light of reality. These people seem completely unable to do so. Likely, these people are among those that have been debunked on a similar issue in recent days. (And a hearty congratulations to Glen and Helen Reynolds for their outstanding podcast of the interview with the authors. It is well worth the listen, and Thomas and I highly recommend the book, as well.)
Conspiracy theorists abound in this world, and Lord knows why. I think it might have something to do with their utter disbelief that certain things, completely explainable, occur in this world by people who truly hate us. It is quite believable that our enemies werte trying to hit us again, in an attack that could rival 9/11. And it is further believable that they have adapted their tactics to avoid notice and detection by our intelligence aganecies and law enforcement institutions. They are, after all, on a holy mission, in their eyes. So why is it that so many believe that this plot would not have been pulled off despite all of the evidence available. It makes no sense to me.
If our enemies were willing to sacrifice themselves, and all the innocent people on board those planes, to commit the worst act of terrorism on United States soil since the Oklahoma City bombing, then why is it so far-fetched that they would try it again; and on a much larger scale. Operation Bojinka was known by our intelligence assets as a very real scenario. It is the conspiracy theorist who disavows the possibility that our enemies may revisit old plans, and tweak them. That is what the British plot was all about. It was a change in tactics and strategy, but not to the extent that it could not have been caught. Indeed, we know that these people were under surveillance for months.
And during that time, authorities connected the dots. Those connections led all those investigating these people in the direction of another attack using planes. And the evidence leaking out as to what the plans were continues to show that these people were serious. How else can it be explained, especially with a couple of stories that have emerged in this case.
And now we have this one; our enemies talking about the suicide mission they were about to embark on. When will the conspiracy nuts put down the tin-foil hats, wake up, and take a healty inhale of reality. These people want us dead and destroyed, and they are willing to go to great lengths to accomplish this. I say let the nuts continue on. When reality slaps them in the face, then maybe they will wake up. Until then vigilence is the weapon that will be most productive for those who still beleive in freedom. It has been a potent weapon against our enemy thus far, and it shows no signs of weakening. Unlike some of the theories nuts like Andrew Sullivan toss around without a shred of evidence to back up their claims.
