Negotiating With Terrorists: Who Gave Them The Go Ahead?

Captain Ed and The Anchoress both pick up a disturbing story from the Jerusalem Post. The smuggling aspect of the story is, indeed, a cause for alarm, but so are these paragraphs that are strangely missing from the updated report:

Hamas officials have managed to smuggle more than $66 million in cash through the Rafah border crossing in the past eight months, a member of the Hamas-led government revealed Wednesday.

Meanwhile, sources close to the Hamas-led government claimed that Hamas representatives recently held talks with officials from the US Democratic Party at a secret location.

The sources told the Bethlehem-based Maan News Agency that Hamas representatives have also been holding secret talks with European government officials, including Britain and France.

WHO met with Hamas, and WHO gave them the authorization to negotiate with terrorists? I want names. We demand answers. The Democrat Party has no business, whatsoever, in talking to Hamas. They were not authorized by anyone in the administration to go over and talk to a terrrosits group. The United Nations may not recognize these yahoos as terrorists, but we have since the early 80's.

Captain Ed brings up the Logan Act in his post, which I believe is more than relevant. 18 USC 953 reads as follows:

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

If this is an attempt to undermine the administration's dealings with the Palestinians whatsoever, these losers need to see some jail time. In addition, it would be interesting to note that on the heels of the ISG's report--a report in which they have basically blamed Israel for all the ills of the Middle East--that this story pops up now. This simply screams of advanced planning.

Now Captain Ed believes that Hamas is lying. However, he notes that YNET is carrying a similar story with a bit more detail:

The Palestinian news agency Maan, quoting a senior member of the Palestinian government, reported Wednesday that "ministers of the Hamas-led government recently held talks with European countries and with a delegation of the American Democratic Party. According to the source, in the talks, the European officials showed their understanding for Hamas' stance.

According to the report, several European countries are already holding talks with Hamas, and the dialogue has succeeded in bringing about a certain change in the European stance toward the Hamas-led Palestinian government.

The Palestinian official said that Hamas representatives held meeting in European countries and even succeeded in convincing the Europeans to accept the movement's stance.

IF this is true, then the Democrats have got to be handed the award for the dumbest political party out there. It is not bad enough that their caucus in Congress is fighting itself more right now than ever before. Heck, they make the GOP base war over Harriet Miers look like a food fight. But if they went over to Europe, and with the EU ministers met with Hamas, that is not a good sign to be sending to the American public.

The last thing the Democrats need is a portrayal of themselves cuddling up to these people. I know they do not like the president, and I know they what direction they would like to drag this nation towards, but I simply cannot believe the Democrats would go out of their way to be seen making nice with animals that want Israel destroyed. And if THAT IS THE CASE, then Israel should be very concerned right now. I do not like to admit this, but there is a good chance that the Democrats could win the White House in '08, and there is a lot that could happen between now and then in the region.

If this news report is true, and the Democrat Party did send people over there, we need those names, and they need to be splattered on ever center-right blog from now until '08. It will show the American people that the nuts in the party want to play nice with people who want our allies destroyed. And we should not forget that Hamas has had its fair share of blowing up Americans, as well.
