Just A Couple Things Before The Holiday Weekend

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and to all of our regular readers, and non-regular readers, Marcie, Sabrina, and I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy, and sane Thanksgiving. Eats lots of turkey, enjoy time with your family, and remember what to be thankful for in this greatest nation on God's green earth.

For those that are expecting the usual relative that just won't shut up about politics--and is to the Left of you--Hugh Hewitt has a few tips for you.

Capt. Ed has a tidbit of news regarding John Bolton and the UN.

http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/005825.php

"Americans are a very practical people, and they don't view the U.N. through theological lenses," Bolton told reporters outside the General Assembly hall. "They look at it as a competitor in the marketplace for global problem-solving, and if it's successful at solving problems, they'll be inclined to use it. If it's not successful at solving problems, they'll say, 'Are there other institutions?' . . . that's why making the U.N. stronger and more effective is a reform priority for us: Because if it's a more agile, effective organization, it is more likely to be a successful competitor as a global problem-solver." ...

Bolton's remarks come as the Bush administration is encountering stiff resistance from poor countries to United States-backed initiatives aimed at streamlining the United Nations' management practices. The influential Group of 77 developing nations recently issued a letter sharply criticizing plans by Secretary General Kofi Annan to establish an ethics office and to review General Assembly-created programs that are more than five years old to determine whether they should be shut down.

The above excerpt comes from the WaPo, and I'm sure "Uncle" Kofi and those on the Left aren't too happy with the comments, but they're ones that have been needing saying for quite some time. It's time that the US end it's affiliation with the UN, pull out, and quit sending money to this organization. The entire group--top-to-bottom--is corrupt. And Capt. Ed points out explicitly the problems of late that this organization has in regard to the Oil-For-Food scandal.

The G-77 warning on ethics reforms should give the entire West some pause about the future of the UN. More than 60 nations have been identified by the Volcker report as having some participation in the UN Oil-For-Food scam that put billions into the pockets of a genocidal tyrant and his sick, twisted sons, while simultaneously starving the people of Iraq. That corruption has reached the inner circle of the Secretariat, through Jean-Paul Mérimée and through Kofi Annan's son Kojo.

Michelle Malkin touched on Jose Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun, Mohammed Hesham Youssef, Kifah Wael Jayyousi, and Kassem Daher. All of them were indicted yesterday. And she points to two people with columns that are must-reads. The first is from NRO contributor Andrew McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy asks a simple question:

HAS A TROUBLESOME ENEMY COMBATANT DETENTION BEEN MOOTED?
Jose Padilla, the American citizen alleged to be an al Qaeda terrorist and would-be "dirty bomber," and thus held by the military as an enemy combatant in the war on terror for three years, has been indicted. The Washington Post reports that he will apparently be transferred back to the criminal justice system and prosecuted federally in Miami for conspiracy to murder, kidnap and maim persons overseas, and to provide material support to terrorists.

Although the charges do not appear to include the domestic bombing plot which has been the basis for Padilla's detention, the charges may obviate the need for the Supreme Court to consider his case. Back in September, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit held that the Bush administration was authorized to hold him without trial as an enemy combatant. Padilla had appealed to the Supreme Court.

AG Alberto Gonzales will hold a press conference on this later today.

And she cites Debbie Schlussel, another well-known conservative voice from Detroit, who has some news about Padilla and one of his co-conspirators. Trust me, this news will give you pause.

That's it for today, and barring anything important coming down the pipe tomorrow, we will probably not post. Check back anyway, just in case. And again, to all our friends, have a Happy Thanksgiving.
