Speaking Of Being Clueless, Jimmy Carter Speaks Again
Yes, President Carter has shown his normal ineptitude for grasping foreign affairs, again. Today, Jimmy Carter has demanded that the US and Israel give Hamas a chance. This shows his utter stupidity in wanting to play nice with terrorists, which is basically what he did in 1979 when the Islmaic revolution came to Iran. "Just let them be, and they'll leave us alone."
I'm sorry Jimmy, that didn't work then, and it's not working now. Handling these people with kid gloves is not going to change the fact that Hamas still wants Israel annihilated, much like Iran does. But what is most irritating to me about President Carter is his puposeful abuse of the age-old tradition of past presidents to not criticize current presidents. Does President Carter think that because he's taking a beating by his critics today that this entitles him to slam President Bush every step along the rest of his meaningless life? I hope not, because the beatings will just get worse.
Critics are right to bring up his past statements. He berated President Reagan over his arms build-up against the Soviets in 1984. He demanded that the UN step in and stop President Bush (41) from removing Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. He interfered with the negotiations dealing with North Korea under President Clinton. He has stepped up and declared the legitimacy of Hugo Chavez's communist regime in Venezuala, and defended Castro when the focus of chemical weapons was placed on him. He has told world leader after world leader that he is ashamed of America.
Well, President Carter, you're not exactly winning friends and influencing people in America, either. Personally, a majority of Americans would prefer that you just shut up, and fade into the sunset.
Below are some excerpts from this piece of tripe that Carter penned:
Abbas informed me after the election that the Palestinian Authority was $900 million in debt and that he would be unable to meet payrolls during February. Knowing that Hamas would inherit a bankrupt government, U.S. officials have announced that all funding for the new government will be withheld, including what is needed to pay salaries for schoolteachers, nurses, social workers, police and maintenance personnel. So far they have not agreed to bypass the Hamas-led government and let humanitarian funds be channeled to Palestinians through United Nations agencies responsible for refugees, health and other human services.
Jimmy, there's a reason why we cut the funds off. It has a lot to do with the fact that Hamas has declared they won't recognize Israel. Add to the fact that he wants us to trust the UN. Yes, the same UN that bilked the US out of money in the Oil-for-Dictators scandal that has erupted, and has several low-rung members of the UN facing prosecution, but failed to nail the ringleader, Kofi Annan. Yep, thanks Jimmy; that wisdom is very enlightening as to where you stand as a sympathizer for terrorists.
A negotiated agreement is the only path to a permanent two-state solution, providing peace for Israel and justice for the Palestinians. In fact, if Israel is willing to include the Palestinians in the process, Abbas can still play this unique negotiating role as the unchallenged leader of the PLO (not the government that includes Hamas).
It was under this umbrella and not the Palestinian Authority that Arafat negotiated with Israeli leaders to conclude the Oslo peace agreement. Abbas has sought peace talks with Israel since his election a year ago, and there is nothing to prevent direct talks with him, even if Hamas does not soon take the ultimately inevitable steps of renouncing violence and recognizing Israel's right to exist.
It would not violate any political principles to at least give the Palestinians their own money; let humanitarian assistance continue through U.N. and private agencies; encourage Russia, Egypt and other nations to exert maximum influence on Hamas to moderate its negative policies; and support President Abbas in his efforts to ease tension, avoid violence and explore steps toward a lasting peace.
Folks, he doesn't get it. Abbas can negotiate without the PA and Hamas backing? What world does he live in? And just give them what they want--regardless of their refusal to recognize Israel and renounce their violence--and all will be well. This is an appeasement view to the whole situation over there, and Jimmy just keeps on giving. If he were president, the money that has been spent on this war would have already been air-mailed to Hamas, and more Israelis would be lining up in the streets; lambs to the slaughter. Jimmy would have hid under his desk on 11 September and not done anything to further enrage the Muslim street. "Just leave them alone, and they'll leave us alone."
Yes, a nice strategy for an appeasing, terrorist-excusing coward. Thanks Jimmy, but I prefer to trust the foreign policy of this nation to those in the know, with the information, and the intestinal fortitude to handle the world as we know it, not the one we imagine. Jimmy's living in a dreamland, and his advice will get Isralis killed, and embolden our enemy even further.
