The Sideshow Bob Democrats Step On Yet Another Rake

No, I can't take credit for that, though I do appreciate the laughs. The moniker "Sideshow Bob Democrats" comes from Michelle Malkin, wand while we may laugh at this "title" bestowed on the party of cut-and-run, they aren't laughing now. BOTH bills went down in flames today, as the WaPo attests to.

Yesterday's lengthy Senate debate over Iraq offered early hints of the 2008 presidential contest, with some potential candidates calling for a rapid drawdown of U.S. troops, some saying that only the president can decide such issues and others urging a middle ground.

The debate will culminate today with votes on an amendment sponsored by two potential Democratic candidates --
John F. Kerry (Mass.) and Russell Feingold (Wis.) -- and an alternative backed by most party leaders.

The Kerry-Feingold plan would order President Bush to withdraw nearly all U.S. troops from Iraq by July 31, 2007. The alternative, sponsored by two Democrats not weighing White House bids -- Carl M. Levin (Mich.) and Jack Reed (R.I.) -- is a nonbinding resolution urging Bush to begin a troop "redeployment" by the end of this year. It does not specify a pace or a completion date.

Republicans criticized both measures and predicted they will fail. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.) has led the attack, accusing Democrats of seeking to abandon Iraq -- where, he argued, "huge progress" had been made in recent months. Frist, who is leaving the Senate in January and is considering a presidential bid, repeatedly called the Democratic amendments "cut-and-run" proposals.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), seen by some as the GOP front-runner, said he strongly opposes both Democratic amendments because they call for "a withdrawal of American troops tied to arbitrary timetables, rather than conditions in-country." He said a phased redeployment of troops beginning this year, as the Levin-Reed approach envisions, would prove to be "a significant step on the road to disaster."

Kerry's bill died an unsightly 86-13 death. The Levin/Reed bill choked out a few more supporters, but not enough to beat the odds. It died 60-39. Allah Pundit has the links to both bills and their roll calls, and the typical Mouseketeer roll call filed right into both camps. All thirteen of Kerry's supporters also voted for the Levin/Reed bill.

And if this just doesn't beat all ... Even looney Lincoln Chafee got this one right! The Democrats, it seems, can't get anything right at this time. Instead of pushing for immigration reform, and appearing like they may have the GOP over the barrel on that issue, they let it go. Neither house of Congress could come to terms with it in an election year, so the subject was dropped. And the Democrats, while still looking for a platform, went the wrong direction on the wrong subject. They have proven time and again that they are weak on national security. So, instead of switching gears, they downshifted, and barreled straight ahead on their course of retreat and defeat.

To the nutter Lefties out there, I don't care what the Hell you call this. It is retreating from the battlefield with our tails between our legs, and it serves no purpose other than to invite more attacks. When we ran from Somalia, the attacks continued to come. Al Qaeda didn't give up on us, content that they drove us out. They dug in and intensified their jihad against the West. Retreat isn't the answer to this problem. Confronting it is, and confronting them is exactly what we're doing.

I can understand the qualms that some people have over this war. The questions come in through our e-mails almost daily regarding what will happen when we do finally pull out? What happens if they fall into civil war? What happens if they choose a path similar to that of Iran? What if al Qaeda just sits back and waits us out? I don't have all the answers to all the questions. Neither does Marcie. We never claimed that we did. All we can do is our best, and hope that things will work out.

We're doing what we can, and the Democrats just don't seem to get it. They want us out. That's fine. Keep showing the nation that you can't handle what the nation is going through. This whole rigmarole over leaving there just continues to show this nation that the Democrats can't be trusted with keeping this nation safe and secure. For them, it's Vietnam all over again. For those who understand this war, it's nothing close to Vietnam, and it never will be. This is a whole new ball of wax. It's a brave, new world, and it's one where we have a lot of enemies that would just love to watch us fall. If the Democrats keep this up, and the nation decides to put them in power, the fall will come so hard, it's going to rattle our teeth.

CORRECTION:
As he is often doing, it is time for me to correct him. Either Thomas did not read the roll call carefully, or he missed it, but Lincoln Cafee dDID indeed vote for the Levin cut-and-run bill. This man, regardless of how little danger he thinks he is, must go this November. Go to Steven Laffey's site and contribute to his candidacy. Send Lincoln Chafee home in November so he quits hurting the GOP.

Marcie
