Vindication Revealed: Iraq DID Have WMDs

***(SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES; THERE ARE A FEW OF THEM WELL WORTH READING AND VISITING.)***

Today, Senator Rick Santorum revealed this letter from John Negroponte about WMDs in Iraq. These are the main points in this letter, and should be noted (especially for those on the Left):

* Since 2003 Coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent.

* Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq’s pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist.

* Pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the black market. Use of these weapons by terrorists or insurgent groups would have implications for Coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside Iraq cannot be ruled out.

* The most likely munitions remaining are sarin and mustard-filled projectiles.

* The purity of the agent inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives, and environmental storage conditions. While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal.

* It has been reported in open press that insurgents and Iraqi groups desire to acquire and use chemical weapons.

These WMDs are old, yes, but they were there when we went in. Saddam lied about destroying them. The president was correct--that he did possess WMDs--and in this letter it is admitted that the terrorists in Iraq have wanted to get their hands on them. We have had incidents where such weapons have been combined with IEDs in an effort to kill more of our troops. To date, none of them have worked.

CNS News is the only outlet to begin talking about this. American MSM sources have refused to touch on it, yet. If they do, I will be pleasantly surprised, but I am not holding my breath. I also believe that if they do report on it, it is likely to be spun, or misreported by them.

This is a story that is ripping through the blogosphere, and yes the Left has already started stating that these are "fakes." They are "plants" in an attempt by the White House to raise its sagging poll numbers. Those numbers are irrelevant. There was clearly a reason that they were not released up until this point, but no one is speculating that. The smart people are disseminating the information released today. The Left is ignoring it.

Is there any question which side the nation will pay closer attention?

UPDATE: 7:30 p.m. AZ Time--
Both of us will be updating this post as we get more information. First, a belated (sorry) HT to Captain Ed for much of the information above from my over-enthusiastic better half. She forgot the "key" link.

And from Captain Ed comes this link from the Real Ugly American who explains WHY the administration didn't reveal this sooner:

General Tom Mcinerney is reporting on Fox Hannity and Colmes right now that that the administration has been keeping this low profile to avoid exposing 3 of the 5 members of the UN Security council; Russia, China, and France. McInerney says these weapons will be traced to these countries, and asserts it is well known that Russia helped Saddam move most of his WMD stockpiles out of Iraq before the war.

This sort of poilitically-correct garbage has got to stop. I don't care if this paints Great Britain in a bad light. If nations professing to be our allies collaborated with a dictator bent on establishing and reestablishing his WMD programs, let the information out. Why is it that we do our best to protect our allies, and our allies could care less about reciprocating the measure? We have been criticized by our allies--opnely and publicly--about a number of issues including, but not limited to: Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, US interrogation techniques, CIA "secret prisons" (Though EU investigators seem to be unable to find them), our "rush" to war in Iraq, that no WMDs were "found" right off the bat, and the list continues to build.

Now it's out that we did find WMD in Iraq. And yet no MSM source has revealed this story. They can't ignore this. The truth is out, and people will be talking about it. And as they will keep talking, they will be questioning why the MSM isn't talking about it.

UPDATE: 8:01 Arizona Time

This is the first MSM report of the find. Of course it comes from the dreaded FOX News, but it changes nothing about the report. This is what news outlets are supposed to do, not run and hide when their worldview comes crashing down. This is definitely a house of card built on lies within the MSM, and they hate to be held accountable.

The United States has found 500 chemical weapons in Iraq since 2003, and more weapons of mass destruction are likely to be uncovered, two Republican lawmakers said Wednesday.

"We have found
weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons," Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said in a quickly called press conference late Wednesday afternoon.

Reading from a declassified portion of a report by the National Ground Intelligence Center, a Defense Department intelligence unit, Santorum said: "Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist."

Click here to read the declassified portion of the NGIC report.

He added that the report warns about the hazards that the chemical weapons could still pose to coalition troops in Iraq.

"The purity of the agents inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives and environmental storage conditions. While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal," Santorum read from the document.
And according to Thomas, who was int he chatrooms earlier tonight, the moonbats are already barking that these were "planted" by the Bush Administration. We knew that this would come out, and if I could stomach Kos, I would check his site, too just to see what the nuts are saying in the REAL looney bin.

UPDATE: 8:26 p.m. Arizona Time

Swallowed my pride and journeyed to The Kos Kiddies site, and I am happy to report I was not disappointed. The title of the entry? "PA-Sen: Santorum Makes Shit Up." Here is how it starts:

No great surprise that the Rubber Stamp Republicans are absolutely shameless. But this from Santorum really takes the cake.

Congressman Hoekstra and I are here today to say that we have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons.... Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist.

"We"? Did Santorum and Hoekstra do what teams of UN weapons inspectors and the Iraq Survey Group couldn't? As Think Progress notes,
this is what the administration's investigators found:

While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991. There are no credible Indications that Baghdad resumed production of chemical munitions thereafter, a policy ISG attributes to Baghdad's desire to see sanctions lifted, or rendered ineffectual, or its fear of force against it should WMD be discovered.

This poor Kossack ... These people refuse to acknowledge that these weapons were there prior to the invasion. And well after Saddam assured the world that all of his WMDs were destroyed. This was a direct violation of twelve years of UN resolutions, and the final resolution: Resolution 1441. He did not come clean. He still had them. And many of these shells were found loaded already. There is no way to determine (as yet stated) how long ago they were loaded, but the fact remains that they were there.

"One of the most interesting things was seeing Rick Santorum nearly pissing his pants with excitement over pre-1991 rusty shells found in Iraq with degraded chemicals in them - as useless and benign as Grandma's 20-year old dexedrine prescription hanging around collecting dust in the bathroom drawer."

That comes from "Iddybud" on Kos' site, and this comes from "Knotlookin":

"Weapons of mas--terbation"

Well now ... Who are the kids and the adults here? But there is more:

And were they found with a receipt that said "From your friends, Ron and George?"

That comes from "Athena." The next one comes from "Casperr":

"and the guest (I can't remember who it was) said that Santorum, like other Republicans, figure that they can spew BS like this because people don't pay attention to what's really going on in the world. In other words, they are depending on an ignorant base. It's really pathetic that politicians can just make up whatever they want and be believed by their consituents."

Yes, it is pathetic when the Left is so deranged that it has to take its talking points from about four years ago. About then, we started seeing the nuts on the loose when they predicted that even if we did find WMDs in Iraq, they were planted. Thomas and I have addressed this issue numerous times. We knew there were WMDs in Iraq. We stood beside that point. And now it seems that we have our proof. It is is a shame that this was not revealed sooner, but I do hope the administration takes the opportunity to reveal all that it does know about the WMDs found thus far.

The nation needs to know. The world needs to know. They need to know just how badly everything surrounding Iraq failed. It failed on the world stage, in the UN, in more ways than most can count. And it failed in Europe as our supposed allies continued to give this evil man weapons and money to continue his terrorist-like regime.

UPDATE: 8:42 AZ Time--

Marcie forgot to include that Michelle Malkin, Col. Austin Bay, Allah Pundit, Glenn Reynolds, and John at PowerLine all weigh in on this subject. In addition, Scott Johnson from PowerLine forwarded this e-mail to Michelle from Michael Ledeen:

Please point out to your readers that Negroponte only declassified a few fragments of a much bigger document. Read the press conference and you will see that Santorum and Hoekstra were furious at the meager declassification. They will push for more, and we all must do that. I am told that there is a lot more in the full document, which CIA is desperate to protect, since it shows the miserable job they did looking for WMDs in Iraq.

This goes back to the internecine war within the administration between the White House, and other branches of the government. That includes State and CIA. BOTH have been butting heads with the president since 11 September. And all the Left can do is come up with nutter conspiracy theories, and ad hominem attacks against Sen. Santorum and Rep. Hoekstra.

Here's the link to Pajamas Media covering the release. And as of now, no other MSM source is picking this story up. No CNN. No NY Times. No WaPo. NO ONE in the MSM has decided that this announcement is "newsworthy."

And one would think that they'd be bneating a path to beat one another on the "scoop." But then again, would you if that same scoop proved you were wrong/lying the whole time this war had been going on?

ADDENDUM: 9:06 p.m. Arizona Time

I have to vent a little here. Pardon me while I grab my soapbox and slam it down in disgusted indignation ...

What we have learned today is that we did, indeed, know that Saddam had stockpiles of WMDs. At least one that was revealed today, and in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, Senator Rick Santorum revealed the following:

HH: That's fine. Again, putting away the classified stuff, focusing on the unclassified and published reports, is it your impression, Senator Santorum, that there have been a number of such discoveries?

RS: It is my impression that there have been a number of such discoveries. It's my impression that this is a very dangerous situation in Iraq, with the number of chemical weapons still believed to exist out there, and the threat that they might in fact get into the wrong hands. So Saddam, it is clear, from this report, had lots of chemical weapons around, and that people got their hands on them. So this is exactly what we were concerned about, that Saddam in fact had large stockpiles of chemical weapons, and would in fact...those chemical weapons could in fact get into the hands of people who would like to do harm to America.

It is highly likely (and suspicious, at this point) that John Negroponte's office has a few more of these such reports. And the only reason we have not been told is that it may damage our allies int his war. Damage? Their credibility? The credibility of France, Germany, and Russia was wiped out long ago. These are nations that are ardently anti-American, and have conspired on more than one occasion against us. Eric Shawn has already exposed that much. But what irritates me more is not the fact that we were not told about this, and other, finds, but rather the reason.

It might hurt the public relations with nations like France, Germany, and Russia. I must agree wioth Thomas: I do not care who is painted in a bad light. If they are supporting an enemy of ours, that must be revealed so we, as Americans, know where we stand in the world.

Not that we did not know that much of the world is dissatisfied with us. It comes as no surprise, and it is our lot in life. No one likes the fact that we act, yet they are quite thankful when we are done. They were after World War II, and they will be after this war, as well. No one had the intestinal fortitude to deal with this enemy. We do, and we have, and we will continue to do so to ensure that another attack like 9/11 never happens again.

But we should remember that our "allies" in this war helped a dictator continue to subjugate his people, and helped him maintain his weapons arsenal; an arsenal that was prohibited under UN resolutions. It should be noted that they voted for these resolutions, but used the bureaucracy of the UN to hide their complicity. What were we waiting to do? Was this to be used as a sort of blackmail to get them on board for other steps to be taken in the GWOT?

There is no excuse. They would not have cared had we saved this little tidbit of information. They raised no eyebrows over the release of the Saddam documents that John Negroponte dragged his feet on. I recall that there was nary a stink raised from the nation, as a whole, in regard to the revelations there. And those were far more damning that this little bit of information. I think it is time we conveyed to the White House that the genie is, indeed, out of the bottle. Who cares whose feelings are hurt in Europe. RELEASE THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE, and show the nation what America really knows about Iraq.

Quit leaving your defenders out to dry wth information that is constantly and consistently disavowed byt he Left. Release the official reports of the investigators we sent in. Show the reports from the military on what they have found. If France whines, ask them if they would like some cheese to go with it, and serve them limburger. The nation needs to see that the government was not lying or deceiving anyone. We did find WMDs. We knew that Saddam was a brutal dictator. And we knew of his ties to terrorists--especially al-Qaeda.

We were justified in going into Iraq, and if the Left cannot handle this simple fact maybe they should head back to the sandbox with the rest of the KosKiddies.

Marcie
