Morocco Attack Thwarted: Was To Taget Multiple Tourist Areas

Moroccan police nabbed 56 people involved in a terrorist plot targeting tourist areas:

(Hat-Tip: Little Green Footballs)

Security agents broke up a group planning terrorist attacks on tourist sites and government facilities, arresting 56 people who included soldiers and the wives of two pilots at the state airline, the Interior Ministry said Friday. ...

“The members of this group were planning terrorist attacks targeting tourist sites, strategic government facilities and foreign holdings, and assassinations of prominent figures for political or moral reasons,” Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa said in a statement.

The latest crackdown was first reported Aug. 7, when police said 44 people had been arrested, including five former soldiers with explosives expertise.

On Friday, the Interior Ministry said 56 people had been detained in six cities and police seized explosives, laboratory materials and propaganda leaflets. It said the detainees belonged to Jammaat Ansar El Mehdi, or the Mehdi Support Group.

The group’s leader was a former convict who recruited Islamic radicals to train them in explosives use and planned to wage holy war, the ministry said. The group allegedly sought to finance its activities through robberies of financial institutions and bank trucks.

Four of the suspects were women, including the wives of two pilots for Royal Air Maroc, Benmoussa was quoted as saying by MAP. Government officials would not comment further on the women, and the airline could not be reached for comment.

We have to give vredit where credit is due to the Moroccan authorities for doing their jobs to protect their nation. We also need to give credit to the terrorists for their ingenious switch in funding tactics. An out-and-out robbery is something that none of us have seen from these people. They always depend on donations and contributions from like-minded people, or from charities who claim they are giving it to the "poor" and "suffering," but in reality they funnel the money to the jihadists. Sort of like CAIR has done in the past.

And this was a large group of peoiple that were caught. Fifty-six in all, and wide-ranging plans to hit areas where they knew they could rack up a quick and sizable body count. These people are not affiliated with any worldwide terrorist organization. The group appears to be regional only, like those involved in the Mumbai plot just a couple of short months ago.

But we are still confronted with the fact that these people are Islamofascists, and their actions beg the question of "Why Morocco?" Morocco, while a self-stated ally in the war on terror, has really not participated in it. they have no soldiers on the ground, and aside from this arrest, and the investigation that started back at the beginning of August, they have nad no "real dog" in this race. So, why hit them now?

But the vaunted "Religion of Peace" seems to have no ryhme nor reason to their tactics and motives. These people practice a bloody theology, ripped straight from the Seventh Century, and delivered to a semi-happy and stable Twenty-first Century world. And they know they are wholly incompatible. Their only hope is to force nations to bow to them in cowardice. Too bad so many countries opt to fight back, even if they are not on the battlefields.
