An Eviscerated Mr. Funny Man ...

In what I am hoping will be my final words on this subject, Joel Stein is collecting the ire of the blogosphere. The American Digest does a fine piece that simply slaps the snot out of Joel Stein. And as Thomas recognized Sabrina's wisdom regarding Judge Alito, I recognize Vanderleun, of the American Digest, in his wisdom.

Once a blogpile of such mountainous proportions starts, there's little left to comment on in terms of the content of Stein's small dry excretion after the first five hours. By that time the whole quisling screed has been pretty much picked apart like a biology major dissects an owl's pellet and glues the contents to a board with captions.

Then it is time for the masters of the trade to go to work and perform, live and on the air, "The Final Evisceration." In this case, Hugh Hewitt comes forward with what is perhaps one of the best full flensings of his career. [Pointer and "flensing" courtesy of
LILEKS (James) ]

If you have ever wanted to hear a classic radio interview cooly calculated to have the interviewee reveal himself in all his naked smallness before a national audience, you owe it to yourself to listen and read the
audio and transcript of Hugh Hewitt interviewing Joel Stein. You owe it to yourself to listen to this segment -- and you'll need to listen in order to understand what comes next. You don't have to listen to all of it, although it is hard to turn the ear away. Just listen attentivily to the voice of Stein himself for a minute or so.

Vanderleun goes onto analyze Mr. Stein, and rather well, I might add. As I have stated his I-don't-care bragadoccio during the interview gave me the impression of a 17 year-old know-nothing. He does not care about the troops one whit, as he admitted in the interview he was trying to come up with something on a deadline.

This is perhaps my second biggest gripe with Mr. Stein. Thomas and I are right here--on The Asylum--everyday. Some days, we have a few posts, on others we have only a couple. Our days are rather busy, but we find the time to write. Every month, we have a regular column that goes up on CommonConservative.com. That is where our collaborative month-ending round-up goes on the first of every month. That column usually takes us about three days from start to finish.

We determine our topics, go back over our sites and others gathering information and updates about those subjects, and assemble it. Assembly usually takes one day, and they average between 1400 to 1800 words. It is not an "esay" taks, per se, but I find it difficult to believe that Mr. Stein languished in writer's block Hell for a week, and then simply rushed his piece. If he has that many problems with coming up with a column, maybe the Times needs to help him. A firing, perhaps?

Each and every day that Thomas and I work here, we come up with the stories and commentaries quickly. It is not entirely our fault that we have the gift of writing, and we do it well. And we do not deny that some of our content might be centered on controversial topics; we have had our share. However, we do so intelligently, and we surely do not admonish those in our pieces unless they warrant it. When we go after people like Kennedy, Biden, Howard Dean, Jimmy Carter, or Michael Moore, it is warranted; these people are nutter moonbats.

We do not go after the troops. These people put their @$$es on the line everyday for the freedom for Joel Stein to continue knowing nothing, and being paid to share his stupidity with the readers of the slowly dying LA Times. The professionalism that this man should exude is instead deluged by a laissez-faire attitude. "Let do, let pass." Well, we decided not to give Mr. Stein a pass. We held him up to the light for all to see.

He should not blame bloggers for going after him, or the hatefuland and disappointed e-mails he has received. He brought this on himself. I would like to hope that he takes Hugh Hewitt's advice:

So Joel Stein has another column coming in a week. He should straightforwardly apologize for being ill-informed and flip about a subject that is too serious for flip treatment. Then he should call Robert Kaplan and ask for some contacts in the military who will welcome him, and go on tour.

If Stein pretends it didn't happen or if he doubles down, he'll just fade further and further away from the eyeballs of readers in the hunt for interesting things from interesting people. He could have a cult following on Kos, I suppose, but does he want to be a stripped down version of Scheer at the age of what, 35?

Candor, confession and concession. Reading and experience. Especially experience among and with active duty soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. It would make for a fine series of columns.

It would make for a fine series of columns, but Joel stein does not care. He wrote his piece. He collected his check. And he will continue to go through life, virtually uneducated about what he speaks about.

The Bunny ;)
