Polls Do Not Matter Much, But ...

... A brand new ABC/WaPo poll shows that many Americans are against any sort of planned, announced pullout of our troops from Iraq:

The American public is sharply divided over whether to set a deadline for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, as military casualties mount and the insurgency shows little sign of ending its bloody terror campaign, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

There are still more Americans who oppose withdrawal than support it, but the margin is dwindling. And the latest Post-ABC poll continues to show little backing for an immediate exit from Iraq: Nearly eight in 10 say the United States should keep troops in Iraq for at least six months.

If this is true then how can the WaPo state that the "margin is dwindling" over withdrawal? If 8 out of 10 people state that the troops should stay a little longer, how does the WaPo come up with the idea that support for the troops being in Iraq is slipping? This tells me, IMHO, that the people still understand we are fighting a war over there, and that the troops need to stay.

The survey found that 47 percent of the country now favors setting a deadline for troops to exit from Iraq, up eight percentage points since December. Opposition to a firm timetable for withdrawal stands at 51 points, down from 60 percent seven months ago.

It is not surprising that the opposition for such a foolish and potentially dangerous idea has slipped a bit. It should. People understand that if such a timetable is set our enemies will simply lie in wait until we leave, and descend upon Iraq like flies attracted to honey. And I do understand why people want some sort of a deadline, but it cannot be announced, and for precisely the reason I just stated. I want my brother home, too (though he is serving in Afghanistan and not in Iraq) just like everyone wants thier loved ones coming home safely. But they have a job to do, and despite what the general public may say, we stay until the job is done.

Among the 47 percent who favor a deadline, nearly half say U.S. troops should be out of Iraq within six months, while a third favor giving the military a year to leave. Those results are virtually identical to findings from the December poll.

Funny that; a poll conducted seven months ago seems to have identical results to this particular issue, yet the WaPo's Rich Morin seems to have garnered up different results throughout the rest of the poll. I am not accusing anyone of anything, but I find it strange that out of all the questions presented, this one seems to bear out the same results as an earlier poll, thereby showing there has been little shift inthe opinion, at all. This makes me wonder how much of a difference really is being published with this poll.

The deadline issue continues to split the country along partisan lines. Two thirds of all Democrats currently favor setting a deadline, double the proportion of Republicans who favor a strict timetable for exiting. Among independents, fewer than half -- 44 percent -- support a deadline for withdrawing troops.

Which shows why their party can never be in power again. With two-thirdsof them demanding that a deadline be set, it should be clear to every American that this party does not even come close to intelligent and deliberate decisions regarding this war. And it should be noted that these numbers are solely dependent on those polled. I doubt, very much, that two-thirds of Democrats across the country REALLY think that way.

But even among rank-and-file Democrats there is no strong call for immediate withdrawal, the survey suggests. A little more than a third -- 36 percent -- of all Democrats said they favored getting the troops out in six months or less.

And that is the key point in this column by Mr. Morin: There is no strong call for withdrawal. John Kerry and John Murtha have been lying to the American people when they state that a "majority" of Americans want our troops home. Throughout this whole article, the only solid majority stated is the "opposition to withdrawal," which is standing firmly at 51%, and that is after a nine point drop. The extreme, moonbat, Kos-Kiddies element of the Democrat party is determined to keep playing the retreat-and-defeat game in Congress, and they are lying to change the attitudes of the people across the country.

And they have to if they want their retreat plan to work. The MSM is doing its job of hammering home the "bad news" out of Iraq, just like they did in Vietnam. The problem is that it is not working well. Too many people are inherently distrustful of the MSM, and they have taken to locating alternative sources of news and information. And with the Internet at their fingertips, it was only a matter of time. Add to the mix the stupidity of papers like the WaPO, the New York times, and the LA Times for revealing classified programs the government is using in our war, or the defense of some of our enemies (I could care less if the families of the seven men caught in Miami were weepy, or the families of the twelve men caught in Ontario are either; the media does not need to be giving a "human" side to these animals), and you have a recipe for the public to distrust the media.

Which is one of the reasons why I take polls like these with a grain of salt. But it appears that there might be some questionable numbers in this poll, and there appears to be a couple of contradictions within it, as well.
