A REAL Scandal
Bloggers were waiting for the other shoe to drop, and today it apparently did. Brian Maloney has been on top of the Air America woes since they started. Two executives from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club were indicted on charges of grand larceny and obstructing governmental administration.
Go to Brian's site, and get all the details. I believe he has four separate and distinct accounts from the New York papers. But this scandal's been brewing since 2004 when it was first discovered that there was some impropriety going on behind the scenes at Air Anerica. No one could really dig deep enough to find anything. Then Brian Maloney and Michelle Malkin came along and really started digging. They found the misappropriation of funds, and started questioning it. Since the end of their expose, which showed Air America wasn't bewing truthful with a lot of things, including it's own reality, things took a turn for the worse at the radio network. More and more information started coming to light about their financial difficulties.
And all the while they kept losing affiliates, but claimed that they were "stronger than ever." Word got out that a couple of their checks bounced for their stations around the country, and plugs were pulled. (I'm not even sure if they're on in Chicago anymore, but I know they're still on the air in New York.) As the Gloria Wise saga unfolded before some very stunned eyes across the nation, some heads started to roll. the company who originally owned them sold them to get out from under financial liability. And as of last month, Emily Gest of the NY DOI stated that as yet Air America hasn't put the money they owe to the boys and girls club into the escrow they promised.
Weeks ago, the liberal blog Think Progress reported that Air America had filed for bankruptcy. That apparently wasn't so, and the network continues to function. In addition, the bankruptcy filed, supposedly, was for protection from creditors.
With these indictements handed down though we're seeinmg the slow fall of this network. Instead of competing in the relam of ideas, they struck out on a new path that they thought could bring down the power-houses in talk radio. They thought wrong. As a matter of fact, the only success they seem to have had was ginning up the nutroots and moonbats. Their contributions to the talk radio genre will be mere footnotes in histoiry, with an asterisk next to them for this scandal.
