Iran Pulls A North Korea And Succeeds ...

At least when it comes to test firing missiles, and thankfully, not the nuclear sort:

Iran test-fired dozens of missiles, including the Shahab-3 that can reach Israel, in military maneuvers Thursday that it said were aimed at putting a stop to the role of world powers in the Persian Gulf region.

The show of strength came as Iran remains locked in dispute with the West over its nuclear program, which Washington says is geared to producing atomic weapons but Tehran says is only for generating electricity. The maneuvers came three days after U.S.-led warships finished naval exercises in the Gulf that Iran branded as "adventurist."

State television reported that several kinds of missiles were tested, and broadcast footage of them being fired from mobile launchers.

"We want to show our deterrent and defensive power to trans-regional enemies, and we hope they will understand the message," the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, said in a clear reference to the United States, Britain and France, who were among the six nations that took part in the Gulf maneuvers earlier this week.

Saber-rattling isn't just for the Asian region of the world, and this is world-class. Iran decided that this was the right time to exercise its military might. We suspected this would happen with the word that Iran was running maneuvers with its military, but we didn't expect them to test fire missiles. Something else crossed our mind, like maybe a cross-border incursion into Iraq, but not the missiles.

But it makes sense. They are still moving forward on their nuclear program. And for them--the mullahs and Ahmadinejad--it makes sense for them to be testing missiles so that when they do get a working nuclear warhead, they already have the weapon that can take out Iranian-Enemy-Number-One: Israel. We poor slobbering fools tend to have short memories regarding world events (which is one of the many reasons why Marcie and I write this sort of a column every month), and we, the people, seem to forget boasts like those from Iran. Pres. Ahmadinejad has said--repeatedly--that Israel will be wiped off the map. With rhetoric like that, and progress like what was on display today, how can the world turn a blind eye to this nation, and shrug it's shoulders.

HELLO? ANYONE HOME? The want Israel destroyed, and they're testing missiles that can hit Israel ANYWHERE within their borders. They are working on nukes which can fulfill Ahmadinejad's promise to destroy Israel in "holy fire." The world needs to respond to this sort of provocation. And make no mistake folks, this is provocation. It also represents a threat to our forces in the Persian Gulf, which is even more paramount than the threat to Israel. If Iran hits Israel with a nuke, Iran will glow int he dark by the end of the day. If they strike our ships, or launch attacks at our troop positions, you can bet they'll be hit so hard that Mohammed will feel it, and Allah will be left with a black eye.
