Taliban Zarqawi Sent To His Eternal Reward

This is great news out of Afghanistan:

Afghan government officials showed the body of Mullah Dadullah, the top operational commander for the Taliban insurgency, to reporters here Sunday morning, saying he had been killed in a joint operation of Afghan and coalition forces.

Mr. Dadullah, an amputee, was recognizable in part from his missing leg and black beard. He had been shot in the head and in the stomach.

He was one of the most wanted Taliban leaders, responsible for numerous assassinations, beheadings and terrorist campaigns, and was thought to be behind many of the suicide bombings that have killed or wounded hundreds of Afghans in the last year and a half.

He was seen as probably the most important operational commander, organizing groups of fighters, weapons supplies and finances across much of the south and southeast of Afghanistan.

Allah @ Hot Air noted that the Times story initially said he had a white beard. That has since been corrected. Of course there are a few people probably wondering why he was referred to as the "Taliban Zarqawi." Here is why he earned the infamous title:

Mullah Dadullah is thought to be responsible for ordering numerous assassinations of clerics, government officials and health and education workers, as well as kidnappings and beheadings, including those of foreigners. And he is tied to many suicide bombings that have killed or wounded hundreds of Afghans and dozens of foreigners in the last year and a half.
A longtime mujahedeen and senior commander of the Taliban, Mullah Dadullah fought on the frontlines as the Taliban seized control of much of the country in the 1990s. He has been accused by human rights groups of massacring civilians during a campaign in the mid-1990s in the central Afghanistan province of Bamiyan, which was populated mostly by Shiites who were resisting the Taliban advance.

Initially, the Taliban and AQ forces denied the reports coming from news sources like the BBC and AP, but when NATO finally confirmed it, the deniers caved in, and confirmed it, as well.

This is a major blow to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Certainly, this does not end the fighting over there as AQ and the Taliban will surely put a new guy in his place, but it does not change the fact that we got another big fish. Granted, capturing him would have been nice, but dead or alive it matters not. We got him.
