British Bomb Plot: New Updates
Everyone knew that today would be a day of continuing coverage and links to this plot, now dubbed "Bojinka II" but many in the blogosphere because of its similarities to the al-Qaeda plot in the mid-nineties. And we will start with those thatr coined that term in this batch of updates:
I am positive that Allah Pundit has gotten little sleep as he continually provides the newest information available. Now, we have some specifics regarding the plans of these people:
Officials said the plotters had been planning a test run within two days to see whether they could smuggle the equipment they needed aboard the flights. The actual attack would have occurred within days.
So, Thomas's guess was correct. this was to be the trial run, and not the actual attack. We--America--came very, very close to another 9/11; an attack that the Brits are calling "the big one." That same story from Yahoo News also includes a statement by Nancy Pelosi:
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said events reinforced the need to implement the recommendations of an independent 9/11 commission, a reminder of one of her party's main campaign promises.
We have institutted the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. We have created DHS (which seems to have a team of monkeys running the show there; another fine example of a bureaucracy as described by Ronald Reagan) and we have lifted the ban on intelligence agencies not being able to share their information. But, as ChicagoRay pointed out it was only a matter of time before the democrat leaders started piping up about how we are "not doing enough." Sheesh. Give it a rest. We won a round today in this war.
WCBS TV reports on the explosives that were to be used:
Federal authorities say there's a new terrorist weapon of choice out there -- and it's very easy to get.
On March 11, 2004, bombs ripped through a train in Madrid, killing more than 190. Investigators conclude that tri-acetone tri-peroxide -- or TATP -- was the explosive compound used. A mixture of common household chemicals detonated by a signal from a cell phone.
Then on July 7, 2005, nearly simultaneous explosions cripple London's transportation system, killing 56. Once again, TATP was determined to be the weapon of choice.Kirk Yager with the FBI says TATP is tops on the suicide bomber's equipment list.
"One of the things that puts it on the radar screen is that it's made from readily available materials," Yager said. "We have seen it overseas and that's what we look towards to see what might be coming our way." ...
... HMTD is a similar peroxide-based explosive. The two are so volatile, a light tap will set them off.
"It's a very sensitive material and mistakes in handling it will cause a premature detonation," an FBI official said. "They've lost a lot of bomb makers."
Joe King is a terrorism expert who believes the threat of suicide bombers using TATP on our soil is very real."TATP is very easy to get," King said. "Are these ingredients readily available? Yes. Are they hard to detect? Yes. Would random searches on the subway system, similar to what the NYPD is doing, curtail that? It's gonna make it much more difficult."
Our enemies adapt. They improvise. They overcome. And they are starting to show that they are not deterred by our efforts, together with our coalition around the world, to stop them. They are still alive and kicking, and still well into this fight.
Dr. Rusty Shackleford has some news about who these guys are connected to. It seems that Omar Bakri Mohammed, the mad mullah of London, has ties to these men. We do not believe in coincidence here at The Asylum, but that name prompted me on a search of our site, and I remembered where I remembered his name from. Last month, he wanted to go back to Britain after being trapped in Lebanon during the opening days of Israel's war with Hezbollah.
So I must ask the question if his attempt to return had anything to do with this potential and planned attack? Possibly. As I said, we do not believe in coincidences like this.

U.S. Muslim groups criticized President George W. Bush on Thursday for calling a foiled plot to blow up airplanes part of a “war with Islamic fascists,” saying the term could inflame anti-Muslim tensions.
U.S. officials have said the plot, thwarted by Britain, to blow up several aircraft over the Atlantic bore many of the hallmarks of al Qaeda.
“We believe this is an ill-advised term and we believe that it is counter-productive to associate Islam or Muslims with fascism,” said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group.
“We ought to take advantage of these incidents to make sure that we do not start a religious war against Islam and Muslims,” he told a news conference in Washington.
“We urge him (Bush) and we urge other public officials to restrain themselves.”
Here, let me help America with this. They do not like linking Islam with the term "fascism," yet that is precisely how these animals are acting. So to that all I have to say is if the shoe fits, buddy. They do not like it? Fine, their complaint is noted. Now imitate Helen Thomas, and go back to being potted plants. And CAIR wants restraint? I think America is sick and tired of this PC attitude; it is time to call a spade a spade.
The LA Times reports that Governor Schwarzenegger has followed in the footsteps of Governor Mitt Romney by deploying National Guard troops to LAX for extra security:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger activated the National Guard today to bolster security at California airports after authorities said they had foiled a terror plot involving U.S.-bound planes from Britain.
"I have ordered the redeployment of security assets to high-priority locations to respond to this threat," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "These assets include bomb-sniffing dogs, the California National Guard, and the California Highway Patrol, in concert with local and federal law enforcement agencies."
A U.S. intelligence official said the plotters had hoped to target flights to major airports in New York, Washington and California.
Some 300 Guard troops were to be deployed by late Thursday to at least three large airports -- in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland -- where direct flights from Europe were scheduled to arrive.
The troops were to remain at the airports until the nation's threat-alert level is lowered, an aide to the governor said.
I would say that the government has responded quite well to the threat that was foiled by British authorities. All that remains now, when it comes to this issue, is the intelligence gleaned from those in custody, the continuing search for as many as ten other suspects in Britain, and the Left's unhinged, moonbat masses that crawled out from underneath their rocks.
